September is Film-Photography Month at Artworks Gallery at Greenbank Farm on Whidbey Island.
Artworks Gallery features the photography of John Olsen during September, starting with a First Friday reception from 5 to 7:30 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 2, with light snacks and beverages and live entertainment provided. Other Artworks Gallery artists will be on hand to greet visitors during the reception.
Olsen shoots with various formats of black and white film and treasures the art of darkroom printing. His current display emphasizes his continuing work with the waterfalls of the Northwest, scenery of Whidbey Island and his completed “Industrial Glamour” project.
John says “I am drawn to black and white photography using film and darkroom printing techniques because I feel the results are more expressive of my own personal effort. I like the demanding authority of a heavy camera, and the finality of committing to a piece of film.”
John’s current work builds on 30-plus years of effort, including six years doing commercial photography in New Mexico and Colorado. To him, this is still the golden age of film-based photography and he encourages others to enjoy it while they can.
Artworks Gallery is 0pen daily from 10 a.m. – 5 p.m. and is located at Greenbank Farm on Whidbey Island. For more information, visit the web site: artworkswhidbey.com or call 360-222-3010.
