The time is ripe to visit the family farms of Whidbey Island, sample their abundance, and learn more about where your food grows!
Now in its eighth year, the Whidbey Island Farm Tour will be from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 21 and Sunday, Sept. 22 . This free, family oriented two-day event invites visitors to tour 14 working farms from one end of Whidbey Island to the other and to see first-hand the variety of crops and livestock being raised in this beautiful setting.
Whidbey Island farmers raise more than 200 varieties of fruits and veggies and raise dozens of types of animals for meat, eggs, dairy, fiber, and, well, for the fun of it. Many farmers also create value-added products directly from what they raise.
- Taste locally made cheeses, jams, or spirits.
- Learn about Community Supported Agriculture.
- See how farms are raising grass-fed and free-range beef cows, goats, sheep, hogs, and fowl.
- Meet friendly alpacas, llamas, and horses.
Many farms will host other farmers, food purveyors, and entertainers, so there is bound to be something for everyone! Bring the kids and spend the day “down on the farm.” Or make a weekend of it, and stay at one of the many bed & breakfasts, inns or motels available to off-islanders and treat yourself to a variety of excellent Whidbey restaurants that feature local farm foods.
The tour is FREE! You can start anywhere, wander at your own pace, and take in as many or as few farms as you like. Maps, driving directions, and details about all the related activities, plus a link to lodging and eating options, can be found at www.whidbeyfarmtour.com.
Please note that some farms are open one day only. Visit the website and make your plans now to enjoy the Whidbey Island Farm Tour this weekend!
