Glendale Shepherd: The Crėme de la Crėme

by Kate Poss in Culinary, Food, More Stories
Posted on: May 3, 2017 6:00 pm - Permalink

It’s springtime, and lambs are being born at the Glendale Shepherd dairy farm. Their mamas, about 60 ewes, are milked twice a day to produce milk for yogurt, soft brebis frais, and hard cheese. The ewes are a cross between European and North American breeds, and owners Lynn and Stan Swanson have been making award-winning cheese from their milk for the past five years.

The family runs a Grade A dairy in Clinton and is committed to practicing sustainable agriculture with artisan sheep milk cheeses and pasture-raised lamb.

Kombucha: Brewing a Culture of Immortali-tea

by Wendy Jones in Culinary, Feature, Food
Posted on: January 11, 2017 6:00 pm - Permalink

Shawn Prickett’s addiction started as a small-scale activity. Like many addictions, the Greenbank resident said it began to escalate steadily, eventually becoming a full-time obsession. Soon, it took over his daily life and professional activities to the point where there was no turning back.

“I couldn’t stop,” he says, eyes wide open.

His addiction? Kombucha, a fermented tea drink thought to be an elixir of immortality, sustainer of life, and healer of grave illness with a history dating back to 400 B.C.

Aunt Shirley’s Thanksgiving Oyster Stew Recipe

by Guest Contributor in Culinary, Feature, Food, More Stories

Here is my family’s oyster stew recipe, which was made for us by my great aunt Shirley every Thanksgiving. It was passed down to her from her father (my great grandfather), who always wanted this stew on his birthday. Now I have my own tradition and make seafood chowder on Thanksgiving to honor them both. I hope you enjoy it!

October Traditions in Coupeville

For me, traditions start when I visit a place that I simply cannot go a year without re-visiting. Sherman’s Pioneer Farm in Coupeville is one of those places. The brightly colored pumpkins, squash, and gourds bring happiness during a season that ushers in many dreary days. Thankfully, the Sherman family is committed to creating a beautiful place to visit, while also working a historic local farm.

Minding the Sky | Blackberries and other local jewels at Hedgebrook

The plums of Honeymoon Bay are ripening; the blackberries are on the way to dropping in handfuls from the weight of their juices warmed by the sun. Summer is almost past her prime—but not quite.

A few hot days in a row made us thirsty for swimming and sunning and lolling about; they have fostered an urge to stretch the few really spectacular moments we have left in the season and make them last as long as possible. Optimistically, there are three more weeks of August and then three more potentially gorgeous ones in September, until the official Last Day of Summer sets behind the Olympics.
