The Halloween weekend continues at WICA at 7:30 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 1  with “Frida Kahlo dia de los Muertos,” a Day of the Dead Celebration featuring local poet Joni Takanikos. Join in a celebration of this ancient festival rooted in Mexico’s pre-Hispanic past and celebrated every year on Nov. 1 (All Saints’ Day) and Nov. 2 (All Souls’ Day). The heart of the holiday is the honoring of deceased relatives and welcoming back the souls of loved ones for a brief visit.

Joni will read poetry and other writings of famed artist Frida Kahlo and there will also be an open-mic for those who would like to read from their own work. Join us in Zech Hall to honor the Day of the Dead. Small plates will be available for purchase and a no-host bar will be open from 6:30 p.m.

All Seats are $12

In addition, WICA will be offering an educational Day of the Dead Sugar Skull “Decorating Day Fiesta“ workshop from 5 p.m to 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 26 for $10. The workshop price includes a sugar skull, all decorating materials and instruction (feel free to bring your favorite foil, glitter and fabric) and all ages are welcome. To register please call 360-221-8262.
