FROM THE EDITOR: Please help keep the muse in sandwiches

Posted in Feature

Dear Readers,

A poet friend of mine recently sent me this quote by the great writer Albert Camus: “Real generosity toward the future lies in giving all to the present.”

These words reverberated with me because I’ve been thinking a lot about what I’m doing here at Whidbey Life Magazine. My main goal in editing a magazine that focuses on the productive people of Whidbey Island is to remain devoted to art in the here and now; to tell the stories of the astounding number of creative people who surround me in my life today because, as we know, tomorrow is not a certainty.

The staff here at the magazine is devoted to promoting the artistic community of this island because it inspires us. This is the generosity toward the future that I think Camus refers to. Being in the presence of live art, hearing music, seeing performances, tasting the food produced on the land; it’s all necessary nourishment to this community and anyone who tells you otherwise is not paying attention. These stories need to be told, because art is not created in a vacuum; it feeds all of us in the present, and its effect will remain with us in that rich and generous future.

But, as you know, Whidbey Life Magazine needs your support to survive. It’s a nonprofit project and, not only does it need the participation of its readers to keep going, it requires membership, donors and sponsors.

Donate now and your tax-deductible gift helps to keep all your favorite local stories, blogs, spotlights, art news and event listings coming to Whidbey Life Magazine’s easy-to-read site.

Your financial support will guarantee continued coverage of all the island folks who we’ve come to respect and admire in all areas of the arts. In other words, it keeps the muse in sandwiches.

Please make a year-end, tax-deductible donation to our reader-supported Whidbey Life Magazine and help us to keep these great stories coming! All donations should be made payable to Fractured Atlas, WLM’s fiscal sponsor. Membership checks can be made out to Whidbey Life Magazine.

And thanks, everybody, for being the wonderfully inspiring community that you are.

Happy Solstice!

Sincerely,
Patricia Duff
Your friendly neighborhood arts and culture editor
