Play That Song Again: When Two Things Come Together

by Erik Christensen in Blogs, Music
Posted on: June 21, 2017 6:00 pm - Permalink

As usual, the key is paying attention. If you keep your eyes and ears open, you’ll see how, like magic, things line up. “Coincide” from its early Latin roots means to “fall together,” something that’s not really random, but two things that fit together perfectly. It’s surprising—although it shouldn’t be—how often two random things have brought me to some good music.

My all-time, top-five musical coincidences led me to Kevn Kinney, Billy Joel, Jason Isbell, Kevin Gordon, and BJ Barham. So, these days, I pay attention. Things come together in a beautiful way.

Carnegie Hall Comes to Whidbey Island

by Kate Poss in More Stories, Music
Posted on: June 14, 2017 6:00 pm - Permalink

Which do you think is a better way to teach kids about music: having them listen to an orchestra concert or giving them an opportunity to perform with an orchestra? The folks at Carnegie Hall believe that giving kids an opportunity to play with professional-caliber musicians is so important that they created the “Link Up” program, and more than a thousand Whidbey Island third- through fifth-graders participated this year.

“The Link Up program was a welcome surprise addition to our nature- and arts-based curriculum this spring,” says Lisa Kois, creator of the Calyx School. “I was excited by what I read about the Carnegie Hall program, the opportunity for our kids to begin to learn an instrument, and to have a hands-on classical music experience with the Saratoga Orchestra. How cool is that? Learn to play the recorder and then go watch, learn from, and play with a professional orchestra. The entire experience was so positive for everyone, and the culminating concert was amazing. Our kids were very inspired. At the end of the concert, one of the students sitting next to me turned and asked, ‘Do we get to do this again next year?’ Another student dreamily walked up to me and reported, ‘I am all about music.’”

Play That Song Again: Before They Were Cool, Man

by Erik Christensen in Blogs, Music
Posted on: April 19, 2017 6:00 pm - Permalink

Ah, springtime: when a young music nerd’s thoughts turn to saying, “I know more than you, and I liked that band before they caught on to the mainstream.” I’m ashamed to admit it, but I fall victim to this dread disease; I try very hard to be nice and unassuming, but every now and then, the “cooler-than-thou” feeling deep within me rears its ugly head.

In May, 1994, I was at the much-beloved Crocodile Café in Seattle, waiting to see great Georgia songwriter Kevn Kinney. I was unfamiliar with the opening act, a local Seattle band called, auspiciously, The Presidents of the United States of America. Since I was in the front of the crowd pushed up against the stage, I could see that they had a small drum kit and — wait, did the bass player have only two strings on his guitar? And look, the guitarist with the Fender Telecaster had only the middle three strings of his guitar. Pretty interesting. This power-trio then proceeded to explode into a crazy set — loud, silly, energetic songs that had the 100 or so people in the audience jumping up and down with pure joy. Those minimally-stringed guitars packed a real Ramones-like wallop. “Holy cow,” I thought. “These guys are really great.”

Spreading the Joy of Music in Oak Harbor

by Kate Poss in Music, Second Chance
Posted on: March 8, 2017 6:00 pm - Permalink

“We’re all mums who enjoy getting together,” says Mary Clarity, a New Zealander who came to Oak Harbor, along with her family, because of the Navy. “We play our music for the joy of it. We throw cheese sticks and raisin boxes to the kids to keep them happy. We just started collecting songs, and now we’ve got a whole volume of them. There are creative people in our group and we naturally find the harmony.”

Clarity’s friend Jen Collins says that, although she went to college for vocal performance, after becoming a mom, she lost track of singing until joining the Ukuladies. The musical inspiration clicked, and she and Clarity collaborated to teach a parent and preschooler class, along with an intergenerational music class on Fridays at a retirement community in Oak Harbor called “Music Together.”

Play That Song Again: Not Fade Away

by Erik Christensen in Blogs, Music
Posted on: February 22, 2017 6:00 pm - Permalink

I always wait until we’re out of time
Speak my mind
Right before you go

So don’t hang up, there’s just one last thing
I’m imagining
You’ve got to know

The above is from a new song called “Postscript,”

What I’m trying to get at is the urgency of the last moment, the magical thing that happens as a song fades out, the emotion right before you say goodbye to someone, or the waiting until the discussion is almost over to get to the point.

I guess these moments are just examples of people letting their guard down, the not getting to the good stuff until you’re almost out of time. The looming deadline, the cut-off at the end of a song, the speaking what’s really on your mind at the end of a conversation are all too important to miss.

Play That Song Again: Heard Ya Twice The First Time

by Erik Christensen in Blogs, History, Music
Posted on: December 28, 2016 6:00 pm - Permalink

When I first heard “Please Please Me,” the big takeaway was that it was real — the Beatles weren’t gods, they were people who sat in a room, recorded music, and occasionally made mistakes. This was a revelation; no one in my family sat around and made music. Music was made by other people; it was pristine and sort of unavailable. Mistakes made the music all the more human, and mistakes made me feel I could be part of it.

Whidbey Island Threshold Singers Bring Comfort

by Kate Poss in Feature, More Stories, Music

The Whidbey Island Threshold Singers provide gentle harmony at the bedside of the dying and those in need of loving lullabies, creating a sense of peace and calm. They sing for those who are in hospice, those who are dying or ill, or those who simply enjoy their company, such as Dorothy Lepisto, who lives in Langley. Lepisto was under hospice care a few years ago, but instead of passing away, she continues to enjoy life at the age of 96. One of the gifts she took away from her hospice experience was the soothing music of the Threshold Singers.

Listening to the songs of “Sarungano,” a CD made by local Whidbey Island women singing and playing traditional Zimbabwean mbira (pronounced em-ˈbir-ə) music, generates a refreshing sense of well-being and calm. Sarungano means storyteller in the Shona language, which is widely spoken throughout the southern African country of more than 14 million people. Mbira (both the music and the instrument) holds a deep appeal for these talented Whidbey Island singers and musicians.
