Sept. 16, 2015
Saratoga Orchestra of Whidbey Island is excited to announce the 2015-2016 Season, with concerts and events in Oak Harbor, Langley, and Coupeville. Celebrating their ninth season, the orchestra welcomes back Music Director and Conductor Anna Edwards for her second season on the podium.
“New Worlds, New Visions” kicks off the season with concerts in Langley and Oak Harbor on October 24 and 25. Aided by a Women’s Philharmonic Advocacy Grant, the orchestra will present two works by the rarely heard early-twentieth-century French composer, Lili Boulanger; Edward Elgar’s intimately beautiful Cello Concerto in E minor featuring soloist Lavena Johanson; and conclude with Dvorak’s monumental Symphony #9, Op.95, “From the New World.”
A fun and festive Holiday Concert for the entire family will be offered on December 5 as part of the Greening of Coupeville activities. This special event will take place in the Coupeville High School Commons and feature a popular Instrument Petting Zoo, a chance for the young and young-at-heart to get up close and personal with instruments of the orchestra. The program will include Prokofiev’s timeless classic “Peter and the Wolf” and a few surprises to start off the holiday season.
Wit and Whimsy will abound in Langley and Oak Harbor on January 23 and 24. The eclectic program features homegrown talent, Gloria Ferry-Brennan, as soloist on Prokofiev’s Second Violin Concerto; composer Diane Wittry’s ethereal composition “Mist”; Michael Daugherty’s “Dead Elvis” with bassoonist Chris Harshman in the role of “The King”, and Stravinsky’s Pulcinella Suite.
Saratoga Orchestra’s Viva Vivaldi! will showcase the immense talent of Oak Harbor High School’s Harbor Singers. The concerts will take place on March 5 and 6 in Langley and Oak Harbor and feature baroque favorites, Vivaldi’s Gloria and Bach’s Brandenburg Concerto #5.
A Celtic Celebration concludes the orchestra’s season in May with special guests, The Gothard Sisters. This high-octane performance showcases the three sisters and their multi-instrumental and Irish dancing skills, all accompanied by the Saratoga Orchestra.
Saratoga Orchestra will also host two special events during the 2015/2016 season—the second annual Gold and Silver Ball on December 27 at Useless Bay Golf and Country Club and our Intermezzo VII Fundraising Gala on February 6. Laissez les bons temp rouler!
